Madman by Mike Allred

Mike Allred's Madman became an immediate sensation when it hit the comic stores in the early 90's. Mike's quirky sense of humor and great artwork was just what Gen Xer's were craving for.

In 1992, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle guys put together the publishing company Tundra to publish the brightest and the best of the comics world. One of those they chose was the new-comer, Mike Allred who created Madman about undead anti-hero, Frank Einstein. It was a tribute to as well as a satire on the whole super hero tropes. It was 50's sci-fi schlock and cutting edge 90's irony. It was dark and light hearted. It was everything you'd want a comic to be with awesome art reminiscent of Silver Age Kirby or Curt Swan as well as feeling fresh and new.

In case you haven't noticed, I've been on a robot theme, pulling out all of the coolest comics about robots. Why?  Because robots are cool. This post has some classic robots in an art deco style reminiscent of the classic silent film Metropolis. Check it out!

This excerpt comes from Madman Comics #2, 1994, published by Dark Horse' Legend imprint.
Mike Allred did what the best creators do, he took from the old, updating it and paving the way for the new, future creators. At the time Mike was an alternative comics creator who you could only find in alternative publishers books but these days the line between alternative and mainstream has been blurred so much so that Mike can be seen illustrating such books as Daredevil, Fantastic Four and the Silver Surfer for Marvel. Times sure have changed, and I think it's for the better.

  1. One of my favourite comic books ever! along with Bone by Jeff Smith, and Uncle Scrooge stories by Don Rosa,

the 90's was a great time for comics....although the era has recently been maligned by know-nothings.

  2. Excuse my choice of words, I should have wrote denigrated rather than "maligned".
