Jack Kirby's mind was too fertile to suppress. He was always throwing big ideas into everything he did. In 1978's Machine Man he struggled with the idea of artificial Intelligence. Is an artificial mind as good as a mans? Is artificial life real life? What does it mean to be a man?
Philip K. Dick once asked, "Do androids dream of electric sheep?" In Jack Kirby's Machine Man he answers the question for us.
Jack Kirby is the great man who created Marvel along with Stan Lee though he didn't have the good fortune to be related to the publisher. He was the work horse who could draw as good as anyone and faster than anyone. He created the Fantastic Four, the Hulk, Thor and practically every character that Marvel put out in the early 60's with Stan Lee.
Around 1970 Jack left the hollowed halls of Marvel to work for it's competitor, DC Comics only to come back five years later to work for Marvel again. In that time Jack's fertile mind created Machine Man in the title of 2001: A Space Odyssey and eventually gave him his own comic.
Machine Man is a great addition to The Great Comic Book Heroes tribute to robots, a series of posts dedicated to the robots that we love so much.
