Gilbert Hernandez' "Space Case"

Gilbert Hernandez's
Heartbreak Soup
is one rich stew that you will not soon forget!

In a world filled with superhero comics Gilbert Hernandez' Heartbreak Soup is special. It has the audacity to depict simple people dealing with everyday issues, issues that we all feel at some point and can relate to; issues about peoples insecurities, past traumas, world injustices and even feelings of being very small and insignificant as in the case with this Heartbreak Soup, Space Case, which comes from Ten Years of Love and Rockets, Sep. 1992.

Happy 55th Birthday Jaime Hernandez!

Jaime Hernandez (born Oct, 10th, 1959) and his brothers Gilberto became independent comic sensations in the 80's with their fun depiction of Mexican/American women in their, Love and Rockets. While Gilberto took inspiration for his Heartbreak Soup from stories he was told about village life in Mexico, Jaime took inspiration for his Locas from the LA punk scene that were a part of.

Jamie Hernandez' LOCAS

Jamie Hernandez has created one of the best depictions of punk rock in comics or perhaps any media. From the very start Jaime Hernandez had a well filled out world with well filled out characters. He must have know people like this in order to have gotten them so realistic. He captures the enthusiasm for life in his characters like no other. He also has a wide range of characters from his two main characters, Hopie, the wild one, to Maggie, the sweet one, to Izzy, the goth/witch. And Terry, the wanna-be punk rock star and jealous lover. Everyone has their favorite Locas. Mine is Hopie, the little spitfire.

"Glenn Ganges in Mind and Body" by Kevin Huizenga

Kevin Huizenga (HIGH zing gah) has made a name for himself in the world of alt comics in the last decade. His big claim to fame is his main protagonist and everyman, Glenn Ganges. Glenn is a normal guy who has little problems like everyone else. He has insomnia; He has an infestation of starlings around his house; He receives mail about missing children; He's a normal dude. Kevin Huizenga uses him to talk about issues that are on his mind or put him in stories that interest him.

Jaime Hernandez' Locas Tambien

In the 80's one of my all time favorite comics was Love and Rockets. It was produced by 2 Mexican American's brothers from Oxnard California (near LA) named Gilbert (Beto) and Jaime Hernandez (los Hernandez bros). Gilbert was great with his stories of Palomar, a small Mexican town and it's inhabitants but Jaime was my favorite. He wrote about the punk rockers that I so love and identify with. His main characters were Hopie and Maggie and, like the the bros, were both Mexican American. Of all comicdom Jaime expressed the punk rock ideal better than any other creator ever. His characters were irreverent, audacious, infuriating, oh so sweet, but above all, loads of fun. One of my favorite strips of Jaime's was a very early two pager. One incredible thing about this early strip is that not only does he establish a number of his key characters, he gets across what the "punk" life style is all about. So check out Jaime Hernandez "Locas Tambien",
